Celebrity Hotspots in Toronto
Hey there Wolfpack!
My name is Caroline Chen and I’m one of your Orientation Coordinators this year! Other than planning orientation, I also work as a background extra, so meeting celebrities is basically a part of my work. I’m here to share with you how you can do the same thing!
In case you didn’t know, Toronto is actually a major hotspot for your favourite A-listers! From local talent, such as Drake or Justin Bieber, to stars from the big screen, like George Clooney and Margot Robbie, to your favourite television heroes, like Gabriel Macht, you can find them all in this city.
As Wikipedia puts it, Yorkville is one of the world’s most exclusive shopping districts, and with exclusive shopping comes exclusive restaurants and hotels, and with exclusivity comes celebrities! With boujee hotels like The Hazelton and Windsor Arms, no wonder the likes Channing Tatum, Blake Lively and Ben Affleck love staying here. A friend of mine actually met Justin Bieber outside one of the Yorkville hotels! If you’re feeling like treating yourself to a nice meal, try dining at Sassafraz or Sotto Sotto and you might be rubbing shoulders with Johnny Depp, David Beckham or Brad Pitt. Getting back to the exclusive shopping district part, if you take a walk through stores like Holt Renfrew, you might find more than just designer bags and Gucci slides, you might also get to meet Viggo Mortensen, Penelope Cruz or Doutzen Kroes. My friend actually met Vanessa Hudgens in the Gucci store once! And the best part of it all is that Yorkville is right beside campus, meaning you can sneak some star-spotting into your schedule any time you want!
The celebrities one might meet here all have one thing in common: they’re all on Suits! In case you didn’t know, the television show Suits films in Toronto (yes the one that had Meghan Markle, now duchess Meghan Markle). You can even spot Robarts library in a scene! Bay-Adelaide Center is where they film the elevator/lobby scenes, it’s where Pearson Hardman is supposedly located! I’ve personally met Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle here!
Another place that Suits films at is actually St George Campus, UofT has taken the place of Harvard so many times! UofT as a whole is a huge hotspot for filming, you can almost always find the classic trailers film sets used parked around campus. Fun fact: the math contest scene from Mean Girls was filmed in Convocation Hall! Also, Margaret Atwood is a Victoria College graduate and lives in the Annex, so you might bump into her on campus too, I’ve heard that she’s quite fond of the Robart’s cafeteria.
Not only are going to sports games a great way to take a break from school, it’s also a great way to spot some celebrities. Toronto is especially lucky to have an NBA team, a MLB team and an NHL team, not many other cities can say that! Front rows of sports games are almost always filled with celebrities! You can easily find Drake at a Raptors game or Stephen Amell at a Blue Jays game, not to mention the actual athletes themselves are fairly famous too. I’ve lost count of the number of baseball players I’ve met at the Rogers center so get your Toronto pride pumping and go cheer on our teams!
Toronto International Film Festival, or TIFF, takes place every September. This year it will be from September 6th to the 16th! During TIFF, Hollywood’s best and brightest flock to Toronto to show themselves and their new movies off, that’s over a 100 celebrities congregated in the middle of downtown just waiting to be met! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the likes of Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olson, and Jeremy Irons while my friends have met everyone from Angelina Jolie to Matt Damon. Isabel Bader Theatre actually hosts a couple TIFF premieres too! You can choose to just wait for the red carpets for each movie, or you can actually get tickets for the movies!
If you've already met someone famous or you think I'm missing a spot, feel free to come up to me during orientation and let me know! See you all soon!
